Frequently Asked Questions

What are your driver training qualifications?

I have more than 30 years of driving experience and certifications for various vehicles, including motorcycles and forklift trucks. I am a fully qualified highest grade ADI (Grade A Approved Driving Instructor) licensed by the DVSA (Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency). In order to qualify as an ADI I completed a rigorous 3-part testing procedure, now followed by periodic check up tests as part of the (Continual Professional Development (CPD) program which is mandatory to legally teach as a driving instructor. I also have a Fleet Training Qualification, and an Edexcel Level 3 NVQ in Driving Instruction, plus additional certificates for advanced driving and skid-plan courses which I can present upon request.

What is your test pass rate?

Test pass rates, like any statistic, are often manipulated by instructors to indicate whatever they wish. Many instructors will promote 'High 1st Time Pass Rates!' in attempt to convince you they guarantee a first time pass. This ignores the reality that pupils may switch up schools at any stage. The national average pass rate is between 40 & 50%, but here at CDS we aim for much higher than that - ideally 100%! While we can train you to drive safely and competently to the required standard - how you actually perform on the day is down to you, but here at CDS we do provide a number of coping mechanisms for nerves to aid you in being yourself and performing your best!

How many lessons will I need?

Unfortunately, there is no one specific answer as people learn at different rates. The DVSA suggests at least 40 hours of tuition to achieve the required standard to pass the test. As your instructor, it is our duty to tailor a bespoke program to best suit you. While some fortunately pass with as a few as 20 lessons, others may require substantially more. The instructor will advise when they consider you are ready. We also understand that pupils would not desire to pay for more tuition than necessary so we strive to bring you to the required standard as quickly and safely as possible.

Is your car available for the driving test?

If you are already a CDS pupil the car will be automatically reserved for your use during the practical test once booked. If you have not trained with CDS and wish to take the test with us, we will gladly reserve it for you once we have driven together for at least one session, as we hope you understand we need to assess your ability to drive our car safely and competently, and to advise whether you are at the DVSA's required standard to pass the practical test.

Can you help with the Theory/Hazard Perception tests?

We will be glad to provide assistance and advice for these tests, and can loan training aids where necessary, or recommend suitable learning materials to you.

Do you provide discounts or offers?

We provide students with a discounted rate, and lessons purchased in bulk also equate to a further discounted rate. Please visit our prices page for more information.

Do you provide Automatic driving tuition?

We currently do not have an automatic vehicle for automatic training purposes, but we do plan to provide one in the future.

How should I pay for my lessons?

We are currently happy to accept payment via personal cheque, cash, or bank transfer with details provided on request. As we look to the future we intend to also provide credit/debit card payments at some stage. We hope you understand that delayed payments may adversely affect our working relationship, so please try to be prompt to avoid any complication.
